Full-year 300-mm wafer sales increased 256 percent over the previous year to represent 60 percent of total wafer sales. Other wafer sizes, notably 200-mm, also provided robust volume growth of 12.5 percent.

Soitec’s strategic project for a new 300-mm plant is advancing and the group anticipates being in a position to announce the location by mid-July.

Our recent decision to invest in a new plant should put us in the best position to continue supporting our customers' transition to mass consumer markets,” stated Andre-Jacques Auberton-Herve, chief executive officer and president of Soitec, in a statement.

Mansfield, Mass&#8212C&D Technologies calls its NMPD modules the industry's first family of fully integrated powered device (PD) interfaces intended to significantly reduce component count, design time, and the installation cost of power-over-Ethernet (PoE) networks. The NMPD's are the industry’s first PD interfaces, according to the company, to feature on-board DC/DC conversion, and provide a full IEEE802.3af-compliant data and power interface to an Ethernet line, including short-circuit protection.

Particularly suited to security equipment, public address systems, remote environmental monitoring, and telemetry and industrial control applications, these devices, which extract power from the power sourcing equipment (PSE) through a CAT5 twisted pair Ethernet cable, are rated for a maximum output of 10 watts. Each module integrates data isolation transformers, PSE handshaking and signature control functionality, and a UL-approved DC/DC converter delivering an isolated DC output voltage. Typical signature resistance and signature capacitance is 25 kilohms, and 100nF, respectively. Device classification current is 4 mA.

The new modules, working from a nominal 48-volt input, are available with isolated output voltage options of 3.3, 5, 12 and 15 volts. Input-to-output isolation is 1500 VAC (for one minute).

South Korea’s electronics production is growing rapidly, increasing by 15 percent in 2005. In 2004, overall its economy was the world’s 11th largest, but Korean electronics production totaling $90 billion annually was ranked fourth, ahead of Germany ($65 billion) but behind the U.S. ($271 billion), Japan ($198 billion) and China ($177 billion).

Chung said South Korea’s electronics giants have big investment plans, both at home and abroad. Samsung Electronics, already the second largest semiconductor vendor with about $17 billion in revenues last year, plans to invest $33 billion over the next seven years in a domestic semiconductor-production complex. Samsung plans to triple its annual chip production to a staggering $61 billion by 2013, Chung said.

Besides domestic investments, Samsung will spend several billion dollars on a 300-mm wafer production facility here, to be built alongside the company’s existing 200-mm wafer fab.

Hynix is investing about $2 billion this year in South Korea, and another $1.5 billion in wafer production facilities in China, Chung said.

The display industry also is investing large sums, with about $8 billion this year by Samsung Electronics, Samsung SDI, LG.Philips LCD and LG Electronics, he said.
