The group claimed if all U.S. households saved 15 percent on their energy use by 2020, greenhouse gas savings would be equivalent to taking 35 million cars off the road and would save consumers $46 billion on their energy bills, or $360 per customer each year.

The board aimed at a wide application range, from entry-level single-function laser printers to mid-range and high-end multi-function models.

Based on the latest ARM core technology, the Spear devices enable equipment manufacturers to develop complex yet flexible digital engines at a fraction of the time and cost required by a full-custom design approach, according to ST Microelectronics.

Micrel Inc., has introduced a Power over Ethernet (PoE) Power Sourcing Equipment (PSE) Controller that provides 8-ports of IEEE 802.3af-compliant power delivery in a compact 64-pin LQFP package.

The MIC2358YLQ is targeted at a range of PoE applications including low-density LAN switches, IP Surveillance, VoIP, and mid-span power injectors in the telecommunications and security arenas.

Fueled by growth in the VoIP market, PoE continues to expand rapidly,” noted Wiren Perera, Micrel's director of Ethernet Products. Micrel's new MIC2358YLQ is fully IEEE 802.3af compliant and reduces the per-port cost of implementing PoE for a wide variety of applications.”

The MIC2358YLQ features enhanced manageability facilities to support a range of management environments. A centralized management console may configure and monitor up to 32 devices, representing 256 ports, through a standard SMB bus remote management connection. In addition, the MIC2358YLQ provides a unique autonomous mode, which is capable of managing the power budget without an external host processor. A full complement of over/under voltage/current monitoring is provided, in accordance with the 802.3af standard, to ensure safety and equipment protection.

Availability: Volume quantities will be available in the second quarter of 2010.

PARIS — As EDA searches for opportunities to generate more revenues from outside the semiconductor industry, Martin O'Brien, general manager, Integrated Electrical Systems Division of Mentor Graphics Corp., highlighted automotive and said the trend is likely to continue with the advent of hybrid and electric vehicles.

Subsequently, the nondeterministic software (LabVIEW) running on the host PC reads from this FIFO buffer, implementing the collection of lossless, high-bandwidth data, which we save to a disk for later analysis. Our user interface allows the entire system to be dynamically monitored and managed. The user can manually update the laser-referenced positions of the tip and sample, as well as the gain settings for each feedback loop. Also, we can control these through automated routines that perform various AFM tasks. For instance, contact mode imaging consists of raster scanning the sample while keeping the tip sample force constant; and force spectroscopy mode involves pressing the tip into the surface to a specified force threshold, then pulling it away at a constant rate.

Achieving Atomic Scale Stability with LabVIEW After developing a custom LabVIEW software suite in-house, we rapidly adapted the instrument to overcome unforeseen challenges or to address scientific questions. Our control strategy provides a path to achieving atomic scale stability in real-world operating conditions. With the FPGA-based feedback, we achieved a short-term noise level of the stage to approximately 10 PM a threefold improvement over prior results using LabVIEW running on a desktop computer. Furthermore, we can image 5 nm gold nanoparticles with a drift of less than 5 Å over a time period of more than an hour, at room temperature, and in the air.

Our drift rate in the air at room temperature (5 PM/minute) represents a 250-fold reduction in the inherent drift rate of our instrument, and is 100-fold better than the current state-of-the-art drift rate in ambient conditions. These results, which closely represent the best drift rates measured in cryogenic systems operated at an ultrahigh vacuum (1 PM/minute), were recently described in Nano Letters (King et al. 2009) and have attracted attention from the broader nanoscience community, including being featured as an Editor's Choice” in Science magazine (March 24, 2009). We anticipate that our ultrastable AFM technology will be used in applications ranging from tip-based nanomanufacturing to fundamental studies in single-molecule biophysics.
