One of the greatest challenges facing designers of HSDPA/WEDGE products is how to differentiate without blowing the cost, size, or power budgets. The design team at Sirific Wireless took these issues to the drawing board and came out with the SW3210, the second product in the company's Nexus III family of 3.5G single-chip CMOS RF transceivers. The SW3210 offers much higher throughput without having to pay the penalties of size and cost associated with implementing multiple discrete radios that diversity traditionally requires,” observes Mike Hogan, Sirific's President and CEO . Receive diversity is a powerful way to get increased performance; as signals get closer to the noise floor, one antenna is limited. So, how did they do it on a single chip? The challenge was to find a single input that could cover all seven WCDMA bands that the chip handles. This avoided having to have multiple signal paths on-chip in order to support whichever WCDMA band an operator chose to use. We benefited from a very talented team and hard-won IP,” says Hogan in regard to the direct down-conversion receive architecture. This design was a deliberate departure from traditional RF designs where the signal chain is custom-designed for a single frequency band. Gone are the days when one band is popular now, and the next band is coming down the line. We no longer have the luxury of optimizing a solution around a given frequency band. If you don't start designing radios that assume they will cover many different bands or standards, your design won't scale,” warns Hogan.
Increased performance is great, but it isn't likely to sell unless it is cost effective. Traditionally, designers have achieved receive diversity by implementing two complete radios. The team at Sirific integrated the capability into a single monolithic transceiver that supports quad-band EDGE, 7 bands of WCDMA, and multi-band diversity. In a typical world-phone implementation, there are 10 different bands at play in this single chip. The SW3210 is GPRS and EDGE Class 12 compliant and achieves HSDPA Category 9 performance. By working in CMOS, the team was able to pack more functionality into its chip real estate as compared to other processes such as SiGe or silicon BiCMOS.
The really good news is that the SW3210 CMOS RF transceiver is sampling now in a 7 mm x 7 mm x 1 mm Land Grid Array (LGA) package. Pricing begins at $9.95 per unit in 10K-unit quantities. An evaluation module, the EM3210, is also available now to mobile handset designers for $1500.00.
