SmartSense eliminates the need to retune a design each time the thickness or material used for the interface overlay changes, reducing time to market and saving development costs for customers.

The new auto-sensing solution ensures that manufacturing variations in PCBs, overlays and changes in noise environment are automatically calibrated out.

The firmware for the SmartSense capability is supported in Cypress's new CY8C20xx6A CapSense devices with low-power 1.8V operation.

Existing CY8C20xx6A customers can upgrade current projects to the SmartSense firmware module today in PSoC Designer 5.0 software with Service Pack 6 at www.cypress.com/go/designerpack6.

CAMBRIDGE, UK — The Sri2K 2-Kbit contactless memory IC launched by STMicroelectronics meets industry standards for contactless cards and stores four-times more user data for more flexible access to transportation, events and other services.

The SRi2K implements a large on-chip memory of 2-Kbit density alongside RFID circuitry. This enlarged data capacity allows e-tickets to become more flexible, to support changing lifestyles and to enable services such as transportation to become more efficient.

The chip enables seamless access to transport modes such as bus, train, tram, taxi or cycle hire, for example, with one e-ticket. Due to its flexibility and enhanced features, the SRi2K is also suitable for access control, event ticketing, vending machines and theme park applications. The contactless memory IC has four times more data storage than the manufacturer's previous SRi512 and SRT512 RFID ICs, which are being used in contactless ticketing applications worldwide.

PMDLE: Any other aspects of the service worth a mention?

Clements: For those customers who do not really know what kind of battery solution they require we will work with various consultants to guide the customer through the design decision making process and in exceptional cases we can even make a mock-up to trial the application to help define the need and then work out the project plan from that point.

PMDLE: So in summary why should an OEM consider the CellPac Plus service?

Clements: Hand-held applications hold many challenges for battery design. From the decision to embed, to the selection of sufficiently robust mechanical packaging or the design-in of necessary space for electronics interfaces, battery design requires considerable resource and expertise.

The CellPac Plus service offers OEMs the opportunity to optimise the use of their internal design staff, which will now be able to focus on core hardware and application design tasks. There should also an added benefit from being able to achieve improved device performance. VARTA's CellPac Plus designers have considerable knowledge of the chemical and electrical functioning of cells, and are able to fine-tune every CellPac Plus battery pack for the requirements of the device it powers.
